Want Your Kids to Brush More?

Monday, November 7, 2016

Being a parent is one of the best jobs you can have. Unfortunately, there are many tough tasks that come with the job. One of those tough jobs are getting your kids to brush their teeth twice a day, with good brushing technique, and for a long enough period of time. However, it is extremely important for your children to form good dental habits. Dr. Lechner in Delaware, Ohio wants to pass along some of his favorite tips for getting kids to enjoy brushing their teeth.Dentistry

First, you should allow your child to choose the toothpaste that they use. This is a rare opportunity to let your child make a decision independently. This is rare for children and will give them a little more pride in their brushing. If they sense ownership of this, they will take it more seriously and be more responsible in their habits.

Second, if your child has a stuffed animal or blanket, let them bring it with them to brush their teeth. Throughout childhood, children build a relationship with their stuffed animal or blanket. They use these objects as sources of comfort. They have them when they go to bed, ride in a car, or go to a relative’s house. If you allow them to bring these with them to brush, they will be more comfortable and are likely to do a better job.

Lastly, you should get an electric toothbrush for your child to use (see Oral-B's selection, here). An electric toothbrush serves many purposes. Children will enjoy using their new “toy” and will brush for longer amounts of time and brush more often. Additionally, an electric toothbrush will make up for their potentially poor technique.

Dr. Lechner wants you and your children to have the healthiest teeth possible. If you would like to schedule an appointment for you or your children, feel free to contact us today.
